Endodontic Care
Endodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing and treating issues related to the interior of the tooth. Endodontists are highly skilled professionals trained to perform procedures like root canals, which are essential for saving damaged or infected teeth.
The Importance of Endodontic Care
Endodontic care is crucial for several reasons:
- Pain Relief: It provides relief from severe toothaches caused by infection or damage.
- Preservation of Natural Teeth: Endodontic treatment can save teeth that would otherwise require extraction.
- Preventing Infection Spread: It prevents the spread of infection to neighboring teeth and the jawbone.
- Maintaining Oral Function: Preserving natural teeth ensures normal chewing and speech functions.

Root Canals
A root canal is a common endodontic procedure designed to treat and save a tooth that has a severe infection, damage, or inflammation within its pulp (the innermost part of the tooth). During a root canal, the endodontist carefully removes the infected or damaged pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent further infection.
Symptoms that You Need for a Root Canal
You may require a root canal if you experience the following symptoms:
- Severe Toothache: Persistent, intense pain, especially when biting or applying pressure.
- Sensitivity: Increased sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures.
- Swelling and Tenderness: Swollen and tender gums near the affected tooth.
- Darkening or Discoloration: A change in tooth color, often turning gray or dark yellow.

The Root Canal Treatment Process
Step 1: Diagnosis and X-rays
Step 2: Local Anesthesia
Step 3: Access Opening
A small access hole is created in the crown (top) of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.
Step 4: Cleaning and Shaping
The infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed, and the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and shaped to prepare it for filling.
Step 5: Filling and Sealing
Once the tooth is cleaned and shaped, it is filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal the empty space. The access opening is then sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.
Step 6: Restoration
In most cases, a tooth that has undergone a root canal will require a restoration, such as a filling or crown, to protect it and restore its functionality and appearance.
